Bracknell’s under 16 Pony team picked up a first double header sweep of the season over the newly formed Brentwood / Milton Keynes team.  Bracknell started uncertainly as Connor Vernon struggled through 20 pitches before accepting his sore shoulder meant the end of his outing.  Leo Nogami scattered two hits and conceded only one run over two complete innings and two outs, whilst his team scored steadily to move into a 10-4 lead thanks in great part to two home runs from Adam Huxley and another from Nogami himself.  Joe Jones came in to complete the fourth inning and struck out the side in the fifth.  Amy Trask made her first Pony appearance on the mound to close the game out and Bracknell ran out 15-4 winners.

Game two continued in the same vein as Joe Jones retook the mound and scattered 3 hits in a five inning shut-out.  Damian Van Niekerk’s two rbi double in the fifth ended the game on the mercy rule at 15-0.  Huxley and Nogami continued to clean up for Bracknell, adding six rbi, between them, to their seven in game one.

The Pony team plays an exhibition game against a team representing Ireland at Westmorland next Saturday as the Irish team travel to England for the weekend.  More details will be posted on the club’s web-site this week.

Joe Jones threw 3 1/3 strong innings in game 1, scattering 6 hits for nine runs, and Kant Nogami, Leo Nogami and Connor Vernon combined for the remaining innings, allowing only two more runs.  Bracknell’s offence scored three runs in each of the first three innings and added eight more runs to run out 17-10 winners.  Leo Nogami went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Vernon went 3 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI and Adam Huxley went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI.

Fortunes did not fare so well in game 2 as Bracknell failed to find the offense to respond to a five-run deficit after the first inning.  Adam Huxley replaced Damian Van Niekerk on the hill and allowed only two hits and two runs over the remaining four innings but Bracknell failed to produce with the bats, scoring only two themselves.  Offensively Huxley helped himself out with a Home Run and also brought home Leo Nogami.  Bracknell succumbed to the Mets 2-7.

The Pony team have a week off before playing on 14th June; their opponents to be confirmed.

Connor Vernon took the loss in a game of walks.  Bracknell's pitching staff allowed 16 walks and 10 of those runners scored.  Adam Huxley hit a double and triple and Vernon also hit a triple as Brighton walked 12.

For the second time this season the Bracknell pitching staff, this time starter Damian Van Niekerk and reliever Adam Huxley, allowed only one hit in the second game and this time the other team could not take advantage of 13 walks, only scoring 6.  Adam Huxley hit a single and his second double triple of the day to bring home 6 runs.  Sam Jones weighted in with a triple.

Coach Vernon's message this week will clearly be to reduce the number of walks.  28 of the 42 runs the opposition have scored this season have been initiated with a "free pass"!

Bracknell take on London, in Finsbury Park, again this coming Saturday in a re-arranged game.  The DH will start at noon.

Leo Nogami struck out 7 in 3 innings in game 1 on his way to the win in his first outing for Bracknell, helping himself out with 3 RBI.  Kant Nogami drove in Joe Jones for the winning run, who picked up the save, holding London to two runs in his 3 innings of work.

London scored 12 runs on one hit in game 2 as Bracknell's pitchers struggled to throw strikes, walking 15.  Adam Huxley was the unfortunate losing pitcher.  London's pitchers also struggled, walking 11, and Bracknell picked up 7 hits.  Amy Trask's catch at 2nd base, going backwards, to hold London scoreless after a lead-off walk in the first, was one for the highlight reels but Bracknell could not keep the momentum on their side.

Splitting with the current champions is a good start to the season; Bracknell will be hoping to build on that start as they take on Burgess Hill in Brighton on Saturday.
